Bonfire Chamber Music Festival 2018 will enjoy its second season at the Myles Reif Performing Arts Center with two concerts at the end of July (Thursday the 26th – Friday the 27th). There won't be a bonfire, but performers Jonathan Borja (flute), Mary Ellen Haupert (piano), Nancy Oliveros (violin), and Pamela Preston Kelly (piano) will evoke warmth, sparks, and fire in their performances.
During each intermission, Mary Ellen will treat you to her s'mores-flavored biscotti!

The first BCMF concert features the artistry of Mexican flutist Jonathan Borja and Grand Rapids native, pianist Mary Ellen (Patnaude) Haupert, in a concert of music by composers from all over the world. With the exception of the Duo for Flute and Piano by Aaron Copland, all of the composers featured in this "Open Borders" concert have a personal connection to the performers. Jonathan will share personal stories about Chinese composer Chen Yi and Mexican composer Samuel Zyman; Mary Ellen will introduce her dear friend, Wassim Ibrahim, a Syrian composer who she met in Poland. Rock, folk, and jazz musical styles are infused to keep you at the edge of your seat, while the weaving of stories and music in this thought-provoking concert reveals the resilience of the human soul in the face of trauma and struggle.

The second BCMF concert opens with a two-piano version of Aaron Copland's Hoe-Down & Saturday Night Waltz from RODEO. Mary Ellen and violinist Nancy Oliveros will close the first half of the program with John Adams' Road Movies. This minimalist work is so rhythmically intricate that pianists and violinists have dubbed it, "Road Kill"! The final work on this concert is a two-piano version of Gustav Holst's The Planets, which is an iconic and oft-performed work for orchestra, but rarely performed on two pianos. Mary Ellen asked colleague, Pamela Kelly, to learn this version for a concert this past April, and the performance brought the audience to their feet!
